By Carol Maher (SAWTBEIRUT) — In response to the Israeli cabinet’s approval on Sunday of a map of the Jewish state’s proposed maritime borders with Lebanon, which conflicts significantly with those proposed by Lebanon in its own submission to the U.N., Energy and Water Minister Jebran Bassil said Lebanon had demarcated its maritime borders according to the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea, calling on Israel to “sign this convention before speaking about international laws.”

(BBC NEWS) — A controversy has erupted in Copenhagen after the UN secretary general said talks should focus on keeping global temperature rises below 2C 3.6F.

In an interview with BBC News, Ban Ki-moon said the target was a realistic ambition for the climate summit. But developing nations delegates, who want emissions capped to limit the rise to 1.5C, were furious.

Good for Texas! The US sovereignty is at stake here! Sorry for the death of any human, but Medellin was convicted of raping and murdering 16-year-old Elizabeth Pena and 14-year-old Jennifer Ertman in June, 1993. Despite the Bush administration’s meddling, the US Supreme Court have Texas the go-ahead. Coming here from another country doesn’t mean you have immunity from our laws. July 19, 2008 (The Independent) — Britain has officially ratified the controversial Lisbon Treaty, it was announced today. The Government confirmed that the final stages of passing the agreement have been completed.Full Report

DO YOU REMEMBER a fanciful Ronald Reagan plan called ‘Star Wars’? The actual name for this political football was the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI), and it never actually disappeared. In fact, it morphed — or rather switched emphasis — during the Clinton years. What began as a space-based anti-missile program (hence the name ‘Star Wars’) became a terrestrial anti-ballistic missile program administered by the Ballistic Missile Defense Organization (BMDO) soon to be renamed the ‘Missile Defense Agency’. According to the agency’s website, the MDA’s purpose is to “develop, test and prepare for deployment of a missile defense system. Using complementary interceptors, land-, sea-, air- and space-based sensors, and battle management command and control systems…”.

Back in October 1962, Russia’s premier, Nikita Kruschev, devised and implemented a plan to construct missile bases in Cuba, easily within striking distance of the United States.
