In the fall of 2006, I had the pleasure of interviewing Charles E. Timberlake, Professor Emeritus of History at the University of Missouri. He taught Russian history for 37 years at Mizzou until his retirement in 2004. (Prof. Timberlake passed away in March of 2008.)

We discussed the strained relations between Russia and Georgia and why the two nations appeared to be on a collision course — which, of course, has proved to be the case. It should be no surprise to longtime readers and listeners of PID that American backing of the current government in Georgia — and the $3.9 billion oil pipeline that crosses the country — are factors in the conflict.
